Guiltless Splurge

Daily Dose: Tip #2: Dairy [DRAG] Queen

Growing up we’re habituated to drink our glass of milk. Eat our bowl of cereal. Polish off ice cream after dinner (well, I was). Our country has one of the highest statistics for total milk consumption per capita (254 kg/capita/yr) along there with Australia, Russia, Finland, Sweden, and Canada. Colin Campbell performed The China Study and claimed that the casein in dairy is linked to all sorts of negative health consequences.  On the other side, we know that milk is a good source of protein, calcium, Vitamin D, & can often be delicious.

Humans are not completely suited to digest cow’s milk; people often develop lactose intolerance later in life as their lactase activity declines during adulthood. I’m not lactose-intolerant but ever since I stopped eating greek yogurt & switched to almond milk, I’ve felt better. (Often the ice cream is worth the bloating & associated consequences). With yogurt I just imagine that thick, creamy, protein-laden greek yogurt stuck in my stomach with no movement… I’m not saying it is easy to eat less dairy, I worked at an Ice Creamery for three years, but subtle substitutions can make a difference.

TIP #2: DAIRY CAN BE SCARY

BEST SUBSTITUTE: unsweetened vanilla almond milk

Lightly sweet but not infatuated with sugar. Buy unsweetened, once you buy the regular the others seem too plain. made from almonds (omega-3s), tastes a little less thick than regular milk but can be substituted on a daily basis in smoothies, cereal, cooking …

ALTERNATIVES: soy milk, coconut milk, rice dream, soy yogurts, lactose free yogurt

tip: mix half of plain greek yogurt (protein) to balance the high sugar in soy yogurt.

tip: add almond milk + only 2-3 spoonfuls of greek yogurt to smoothies to thicken

Try these. At least for a week, just swap your regular grocery-bought milk for one of these. Watch the sugar content in the yogurts. Maybe have a roommate try it with you in case you do not like the flavor or brand. Be adventurous & find the brand that you like.

Like I said do not stop consuming dairy altogether. You can still add the milk to your coffee at Starbucks. Try consuming less just for one week & see how it goes.

Banana-Blueberry Smoothie

Prep Time: 15 seconds   Cook Time:  2 minutes

frozen blueberries

1/2 frozen banana

unsweetened almond milk

2-3 spoonfuls greek yogurt

Blend & Go.

No ice required if your fruit is frozen. Take it to go in a solo cup, thermos, or coffee mug (all the cool kids drink coffee I hear).

Cool Off with Arctic Zero

STORY: About a year ago I came across a product called “Arctic Zero.” It’s an ice cream brand that is sold in pints (and now in bars). Each pint only has 150 calories! Too good to be true? I ordered it off Amazon. . . at the time locations to purchase it were limited. However, after waiting over a month I realized my order was never coming.

PRICE: A few days ago I revisited the website and found there was a location that sold it around the corner. I bought the Vanilla Maple for $4.95. At first I realized it was quite expensive. But remembered that a few nights ago I purchased a kids size ice cream from Tasti-D Lite and it was $4.35 and Ben & Jerry’s pints are at a similar price.

FLAVORS: Vanilla Maple, Chocolate, Coffee, Cookies & Cream, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Mint Chocolate Chip.

Taste: I tried the Vanilla Maple. The first few bites were impressive but after a few you realize it is more of a yogurt and is not the rich Ben & Jerrys flavor. However, on the plus side, it wasn’t as over-filling as Ben & Jerrys. The hint of Maple was a unique touch. I think it would have been better with some toppings or a crunch addition. It would be good for smoothies and milkshakes as a base flavor.

CALORIES: After a few spoonfuls (right out of the pint container) I realized i needed to put it down. Then I realized, 1/4 of the container is ~ 37 calories with only 5 grams of sugar. Needless to say, I took a few more bites.

1/2 cup (4 servings per container) = 45 calories, 0 fat calories, 7 carbs, 2 g fiber, 7 g sugar, 4 grams of protein.

The New Scoop

My recent discovery on the food shelves is Jelly Beans Cold Stone Ice Creamery edition. Immediately, I swiped a package off the shelf when my eyes saw them. The taste of cold stone in the something the size of my thumbnail?

The Five Flavors:

Chocolate Devotion

Our Strawberry Blonde

Birthday Cake Remix

Mint Mint Chocolate Chip

Apple Pie a La Coldstone

As for flavor reviews, I found the chocolate devotion to be of an awkward chocolate taste, yet delicious enough to satisfy a chocolate craving. I am not much of a chocolate ice cream fan, but I think the makers did a successful job reproducing the popular sundae into a jellybean.

I found the strawberry blonde to have a very strong taste. Almost overpowering the first bite. It packed a lot of punch in that small shape.

Birthday Cake Remix, my favorite sundae at Cold Stone Creamery, was surprisingly delicious. I was curious how they would incorporate – cake ice cream, brownies, fudge, and sprinkles – all into one flavor. Your tongue does experience a hint of each.

I worked in an ice cream place for two summers and Mint Chocolate Chip was the one flavor I did not indulge in. However, I proceeded to try the jellybean. Not my favorite, probably because I don’t enjoy mint ice cream. I found it to taste very simple – after all, all they needed was mint and a hint of chocolate.

Apple Pie A La Cold stone was definitely the one that packed the most flavor. The first one I tried, was too much apple. The second one I tried, I noticed the cinnamon, the caramel, and then the apple. It definitely delivered and apple pie sundae all in one.

GUILTLESS SPLURGE qualifier?

Each jellybean is merely 4 calories. A Like It (the smallest size) of just cake batter ice cream alone (sans the brownie, the fudge, the sprinkles) is 340 calories and 170 fat calories. Although the ice cream is truly a guilty pleasure, I think these creative jellybeans can curb a craving in the meantime and act as a guiltless splurge. . Plus, you can have a LIKE IT SIZE (142 g) of jellybeans for less than half the calories of just the ice cream alone.

Keep a package of this new sundae on hand & it’ll keep that LOVE IT size off other parts…
